Jamie Oliver’s Everyday Super Food

One of the best-loved celebrity chefs and television personality, Jamie Oliver, was in Toronto recently promoting his brand new cookbook, Everyday Super Food.

Indigo hosted an exclusive television screening of Jamie’s new Food Network Canada show, Jamie’s Super Food, and attendees got to listen in on a Q&A from the British chef himself. Held at Cineplex Varsity Theatre, ticket-holders also received a signed copy of Everyday Super Food.

If you get the chance I urge you to check out Jamie’s Super Food. It proves that healthy food doesn’t have to be boring. It’s not often that I watch a cooking show that really inspires me to not only get in the kitchen, but think about (and be happy with) what I’m putting in my body.

The inspiration behind this series spun from him turning the big 4-0 and trying to work out the best path to live a healthy life through food and productivity. Venturing around the world and seeing how and why people lived the longest and most productive lives in these communities sparked a look into their diet.  Jamie then worked to devise recipes based on these “super food” ingredients. The episode which today’s audience was shown had five delicious-looking recipes (which are also in his cookbook):

  • Cheese & Corn Pancakes
  • Fish Tacos with Kiwi, Lime & Chile Salsa
  • Healthy Chicken Caesar Salad
  • Chicken & Squash Cacciatore
  • Pomegranate, Ginger & Lime Drink

As for the cookbook, there’s a wide variety of recipes. On first glance they seem easy enough to execute, with ingredients that anyone will be able to get their hands on from their local grocery store or farmer’s market. It’s also much more than a cookbook. If you flip past the recipes near the back there’s a section of “Living Well”–a good chunk of information about protein, organic food, importance of sleep, properly shopping for groceries and more.

A tidbit that I liked about the event today is that Jamie was responsible for all the food photography in his new cookbook. I also liked learning that just by swapping low-fat yogurt for mayo for a Caesar dressing can save you up to 90% of the saturated fat!

I will definitely be testing some of the recipes out. And I look forward to making some of these healthy dishes with my students to get them to see that food that is good for you can be simple to prepare and taste amazing.

It’s great that Jamie Oliver puts a lot of effort into making society see the importance of healthy eating at a young age (check out Food Revolution if you haven’t yet). Children nowadays need to have exposure to food that is wholesome and good for their growing bodies. Which makes me more thankful that I have a hand in this myself by teaching culinary skills to high school students.
